Notes:
1. Kemalani – Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of missionaries. He
was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a missionary
teacher.
2. Lunalilo – William Charles Lunalilo, son of Kanaʻina and Miriam ʻAuhea Kekāuluohi,
was a student of the Chiefs' Children's School at the time of this letter. He later reigned as
King of Hawai‘i from January 8, 1873 until February 3, 1874.
3. Kanaina – Charles Kanaʻina was a man of chiefly lineage who married Miriam ʻAuhea
Kekāuluohi. Their son, Willian Charles Lunalilo, became the sixth monarch of the
Hawaiian Kingdom.
4. Otato 26 1838 – The date in the original letter is unclear, but seems to be October 26,
while the annotation on the outside, possibly by an archivist, gives October 20.
