November 18, 1830
To Levi Chamberlain
Notes:
1. Liwi/Liwai Kamalani - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second
company of missionaries, superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and a
missionary teacher.
2. poaha - Po‘ahā, lit. Thursday, is a reference to the Bible study meetings, held on
Thursdays, that prepared one for baptism and membership in the church
congregation.
3. Paukane - Pau kāne, unnumbered, indicates the close of the kāne, the males, the
following three entries being female. That would explain Kekūanāoʻa's mistaken
(and corrected) counting, where he crossed out "kumamakahi," meaning eleven. It
seems he accidently added Paukane as a name in his initial tally.
4. akahiwahi 1 - This is likely a truncated form of ʻakahi wahine, or "first female."
5. Kekuanaoa - Mataio Kekūanāoʻa, of chiefly descent, was first married to Kalani
Pauahi and then to Elizabeth Kīnaʻu. He was a member of the royal court and held
important positions in the Hawaiian government throughout his life.
