Here is this person, Kalawahine, the school teacher in Waimea. I have heard
his/her intention to join the Poʻahā. He/she came often to see me when we were in
Waialua. That congregation, however, is under Kaiana and still under his observance at
this time.

Notes:
1. Mi Kamelani - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of
missionaries. He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and
served as a missionary teacher.
2. Kalawahine - A person referred by Gideon Laʻanui for attendance at the Poʻahā.
3. poaha - The Po‘ahā, lit. Thursday, is a reference to the Bible study meetings, held
on Thursdays, that prepared one for baptism and membership in the church
congregation.
4. Kaiana - This person is not identified other than being responsible for the
congregation at Waialua.
5. Gideona Laanui - Gideon Peleiōhōlani Laʻanui was a native of Waimea, Hawaiʻi
who was partly raised in the court of Kamehameha I and married Nāmāhana, a
sister of Kaʻahumanu. He was an early Christian convert and became an active
member of the church, living in Waialua, Oʻahu.
