Notes:
1. Mikamalina - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of
missionaries. He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a
missionary teacher.
2. Poaha - Po‘ahā, lit. Thursday, is a reference to the Bible study meetings, held on
Thursdays, that prepared one for baptism and membership in the church congregation.
3. Umiokalani - Heneriaka ʻUmiokalani is the writer of this and several other letters.
Although unidentified, she apparently held a position in the church that allowed her to
make recommendations for membership in the Bible study meetings.
