Translation:
Chamberlain, I send you salutations,
Here are some Friday students of mine, proceeding in their desire for the Poaha. Here are
their names: Leihulu, Keae, Puhene, Nahinalau 4. Here is this woman, a prior student of
Iokebeda, who was given over to Kapau. The name is Maluihi, a spelling student of Maiao’s and
mine in the time when the school building had not been damaged. From that time she has been
attending, six weeks in that building. If, perhaps, you have his/her name [last line folded]

Notes:
1. Kamalani - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of missionaries,
superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and a missionary teacher.
2. Poaha - The po‘ahā [lit. Thursday] is a reference to the Bible study meetings, held on
Thursdays, that prepared one for baptism and membership in the church congregation.
3. poalima - Lit. Friday, this apparently refers to a regular weekly meetings held by
ʻUmiokalani.
4. Umiokalani - Heneriaka ʻUmiokalani is the writer of this and several other letters.
Although unidentified, she apparently held a position in the church that allowed her to
make recommendations for membership in the Bible study meetings.
5. The last lines of the letter are cut off, obscuring part of the last line of text and what
appears to be the attendee’s name below.
6. The top edge of the letter cover is cut off, obscuring what may be the sender or
recipient’s name.
