Waiawa, August 9, 1869
W. Chamberlain
Greetings to you,
I received your letter and the amount of money in your hands. It seems, however,
that the money for the newspaper is unclear in your report. But I received your receipt for
the bibles that was paid at the Kuokoa office on June 2, 1869.

$8.00

Because of this, I was surprised that perhaps you had not received the other newspaper
monies, because the Kuokoa delivery boy
[Page 2 of 2, left side]
previously brought, in his hand, 27 dollars to Joseph Kawainui. A receipt was not
obtained from him for those dollars delivered by hand.
The second delivery was 9.00, and that money was probably received by you, but
I have looked for that receipt and it was not found, but maybe later. The total is:
27

2
$38.00
$5.00 Here in my hands
$43.00 The total from the delivery by this boy, and this boy is now retiring.
[Page 2 of 2, right side]
Regarding this, discuss with Ios. Kawainui about that 27.00 dollars lest it disappear
completely.
With appreciation,
John Ii
Notes:
1. Ioane Ii - John Papa ‘Ī‘ī (1800-1870) had many roles in the Kingdom of Hawaii, and
was writing a column for the newspaper Ka Nupepa Kuokoa about Hawaiian history,
parts of which were later published in English as “Fragments of Hawaiian History,”
for which ‘Ī‘ī is well known today.
2. W. Chamberlain - Warren Chamberlain, son of missionary Levi Chamberlain,
handled the accounts of the newspaper Ka Nupepa Kuokoa.
3. Ios. Kawainui - Joseph U. Kawainui (c.1841-1895), born in Hana, Maui and educated
at Royal School in Honolulu, was trained in printing at Lahainaluna. He became coeditor and editor of the Kuokoa newspaper for a number of years.
