Mr. Chamberlain,
Here are these people who have expressed their wish to join the Poaha, they are
subjects of the two of us. Kekuku is the name of one and Kealohaaukai is the name of the
other.

Charles Kanaina
November 3, 1831
Notes:
1. Kamalani - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of
missionaries, superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a
missionary teacher.
2. poaha - The Po‘ahā, lit. Thursday, is a reference to the Bible study meetings, held
on Thursdays, that prepared one for baptism and membership in the church
congregation.
3. Charles Kanaina - Charles Kanaʻina was a chief, a member of court, and the
husband of Miriam ʻAuhea Kekāuluohi.
4. kanaka no, no maua - Kānaka nō, no māua (subjects indeed, of the two of us)
probably indicates two people from the lands or household of Kanaʻina and his
wife.
