June 24, 1839
For
Doctor Judd
Waiahao.
Notes:
1. Kauka - Dr. Gerrit Parmele Judd came to Hawaiʻi with the second company of
missionaries, worked as a missionary and doctor, then later became translator for
Kamehameha III, among other government positions.
2. ke Dala o ke ka nawai - This reference is unclear, but seems to indicate that Kekūanāoʻa
is submitting funds, paying $25 of $50 owed for the printing of laws.
3. Mataio Kekuanaoa - Mataio Kekūanāoʻa, of chiefly descent, was first married to Kalani
Pauahi and then to Elizabeth Kīnaʻu. He was the Royal Governor of the island of Oʻahu
from 1834-1868, a member of the House of Nobles and Privy Council, the 6th Kuhina
Nui (regent) and the father of Kamehameha IV and Kamehameha V.
4. Mr. Chamberlain - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of
missionaries. He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a
missionary teacher.
