Greetings to you,
Grant me some cash, $25.00. There are the funds from us contracting the ship Paalua. I
have 45 dollars remaining with you. $10 for the reams of paper, this $25, and that leaves $20 still
with you. This is because I am in need of cash.

1. Livi Chamberlain - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of
missionaries. He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a
missionary teacher.
2. Paalua Moku - the ship Paʻalua. This refers to a ship that sailed between the islands for
many years.
3. $45 - The dollar transactions in the letter do not add up on their own, but may refer to the
ship monies or other figures not specified in the letter.
4. Kekuanaoa - Mataio Kekūanāoʻa, of chiefly descent, was first married to Kalani Pauahi
and then to Elizabeth Kīnaʻu. He was the Royal Governor of the island of Oʻahu from
1834-1868, a member of the House of Nobles and Privy Council, the 6th Kuhina Nui
(regent) and the father of Kamehameha IV and Kamehameha V.
5. Paalua - Paʻalua, the writer of this letter from Kekūanāoʻa, bears the same name as the
ship Paʻalua.
