Do extend loving regards to V. Kamamalu. I received your letter with fond thoughts of you two and the children of ours. And I agree with your words, I am praying to God amid this sadness and trouble when I find a moment of respite, I pray cordially to God, letting my thoughts rely upon him, the one who is blesses us. And when the pain is great, I then pray to God amid the sadness and distress. I always praise God, who helps those who always place their trust in him, and I ask that we all strive together through continual prayer to God, on my own behalf, on behalf of all the children of ours and for the King and Prime Minister and for all the Chiefs and people, that we may all be blessed on the day that our Lord is beheld. [Page 2 of 3] I felt great compassion for Moses and Dr. Judd on the day they went back, for there was much rain and bad condition of the roads, and when they returned, they had to endure the storm and the muddy roads. Kuke - Amos Starr Cooke was the headmaster of the Chiefs’ Children’s School in Honolulu, educating the children of the ruling chiefs. 2. V. Kamamalu - Victoria Kamāmalu Kaʻahumanu IV, daughter of Mataio Kekūanāoʻa and Elizabeth Kīnaʻu, was about 5 years old at the time of this letter, a student at the school. 3. Mose - Mose refers to Moses Kekūāiwa, son of Mataio Kekūanāoʻa and Elizabeth Kīnaʻu, who was a teenager at the time of this letter. 4. Kauka - Dr. Gerrit Parmele Judd, endearingly known as Kauka, was a member of the third company of missionaries and a medical doctor. He eventually left the mission to serve in various roles in the Hawaiian Kingdom government. 5. Kuke wahine - Mrs. Juliette Montague Cooke was the wife of Amos Starr Cooke and a teacher at the Chiefs’ Children’s School. 6. Sarai - Sarai, the wife of John Papa ʻĪʻī at the time of the letter, assisted at the Chiefs' Children's School. 7. Kekuanaoa - Mataio Kekūanāoʻa, of chiefly descent, was first married to Kalani Pauahi and then to Elizabeth Kīnaʻu.
