Hamakua October 11, 1837
Greetings to you all,
Missionary leaders, I, Kaaukai, am requesting that you provide a minister here in Hamakua.
This is because we do not have a minister, nor a teacher. Alas! Alas for us! We shall die,
and thousands here in Hamakua are descending to the grave, men, women and children, alas,
how sad for us us, being without a teacher.
O faithful one, offer up yourself as a soldier for Jesus Christ. Stand up and help us here in
benighted Hamakua.
O missionary leaders, rise up and provide a minister for us, help us as a people in the
name of Jesus Christ.
Listen, all of you leaders, all who agree with this message and those who care about our
miring in death. If only you would have compassion for us and provide a teacher for us, put his
[name] on paper and give it to me in advance.
I shall keep his name with gladness for my speaking to God and to you all, so that my
eyes may be set upon his arrival into the Atlantic Ocean and to here in the Pacific, and through
the coral heads here in Hawaii.
Regards to all of you,
From Kaaukai
