HMH Material Culture Collection - American Applique Quilt - 86.8.2.C7
American applique quilt; 4 61" long vertical rows of appliqued flowers in plain & printed fabrics, with jade green leaves, centers of flowers are embroidered with French knots, satin stitch and Stem stitch. Quilt is of white cotton fabric with 2" jade green inner border 8" from edge on sides, 7 5/8" at foot and 2 7/8" at top. Edge is bound in white bias fabric. Quilting is in a diamond pattern in center; border twined pattern, white backing with no visible batting. Flowers made on 5 1/2" squares sewn together, appliqued through backing, 7 3/8" white strips between flowers, inside green border is 5 5/8" white border, then center section made up of the 61" strips of white and appliqued squares. Right top corner has a black stain that looks like tar. Some yellowing on back where it was folded and on one edge. Worn places in some flowers, black spot in middle, left spots on left side of flowers. Printed label has name of maker "Mrs. J. H. King" and "1933" is embroidered in one corner of the quilt.

Hawaiian Quilt in the bird of paradise design, with center design of leaves and flowers; border with leaves and flowers in each corner with smaller leaf and flower design between corners. Jade green cotton fabric on plain white background, with appliqued flowers in yellow, pink, and blue. Echo quilting in white cotton thread. Binding tattered, 6 small holes in quilt top. Back of bright pink fabric, binding jade green.
Made by Alice Mahelona (Mrs. Samuel) for Margot Armitage in the 1920s. Mrs. Mahelona worked with Margot's aunt in a dressmaking venture. Margot married Francis S. Morgan, a Judd descendant.

HMH Material Culture Collection - Patchwork Quilt - 85.1.4.NM_01
Patchwork quilt - two quilt tops sewn together. Tufted with white yarn. Hand stitched with white thread. Top is made from 4 1/2" blocks alternating with 9 patch blocks (4 plain patches, 5 patterned), blocks set diagonally, alternating plain and patterned (pattern made up of 23 large and small triangles sewn around a square to form a cross).
Belonged to Edmund E. and Marie (Ellert) Ehlke, made by Marie's grandmother, Ann (Simon) Ehlke around 1915.

Quilt: Patchwork quilt - two patchwork quilt tops sewn together with a calico binding. Not quilted, but tufted with white yarn. Front side: made up of 7" blocks, alternating white and patterned (patterned blocks made up of 9 patches, 5 colored and 4 white, 5/8" square). Back side: made up of blocks of pink and patterned blocks (patterned blocks, 4 patches in white, blue, brown and black). Several patches on back worn (fabric deteriorating). Handstitched with white thread. Double 9 - Patch - Safford and Bishop p.112.

HMH Material Culture Collection - Hawaiian Quilt "Lei O Kaahumanu -80.9.1.NM
"Lei o Kaahumanu" Hawaiian quilt (kapa) gold on white in "Kaahumanu" pattern queen size. Crown & kahili pattern with the name "Kaahumanu" in the center medallion topped with a crown. Crown motif in the four corners with kahili motif on each of the four sides; all motif are surrounded by floral leis.

Brown spot on lower edge of quilt where PRCC cleaned in 1984. Several spots on body, large near top.

Given to Joseph Davis Bicknell as a wedding present in 1910 "by some woman who had worked on the plantation he was raised on" according to Mr. Bicknell's daughter, Ellen Bicknell Wilson (Mrs. Frank E.). Mr Bicknell (brother of James Bicknell) was raised at Kohala plantation in Kawai (or Kohala?), Hawaii, and was a grandson of the Rev. and Mrs. Elias Bond.

Hawaiian Quilt: Embroidered redwork with designs of butterflies, roses, and birds. Echo quilted. Binding machine sewn. Wool batting. Verso - There's a flaw in the fabric weave. Cotton fabric, thread binding.
Purchased at Punchbowl Homes Senior Citizen's Club garage sale around 1990. Thought to have been made on Kaua'i.
