                <text>Hawaiian Flag Quilt: Flags (Hawaiian) surround a central coat of arms (C.O.A.). The C.O.A. is pre 1897 (per Thrum's Hawaiian Annual Almanac). C.O. A. is countour quilted with decorative red embroidery stitching around applique. Flag quilting is straight, following the stripes. Two different red fabrics used: a brighter red in the center square and diagonal bars of Union Jack; a faded red flag stripes, vertical and horizontal bars of Union Jacks. Quilt top assembled by machine. Binding machine sewn. Cotton and wool.&#13;

                <text>Hawaiian Quilt: "Mokihana". Red applique on white. The applique fabric is plain weave cotton, the background is a cotton bed sheet. The batting is cotton (?). The backing is bleached muslin. Binding was machine sewn same fabric as the applique. Applique stitch is overcast, white thread. Red fabric and binding are very worn. There is a large hole in the background near the center. A muslin patch was sewn on the backing by curatorial staff to strengthen the area around the hole.</text>
