Batting has balled up from washing, white fabric discolored, and some of the thread used for quilting has broken. Blue binding worn. Stained with white fabric discolored, 6 minor holes in front, 1" tear in backing.</text>

                <text>Hawaiian quilt entitled "Kahili a Me Peahi o Liliuokalani" (The feathered royal stands and fans of Queen Liliuokalani). Fabric is 100% cotton, design - medium blue; background - white; backing - white; binding - blue chambray; quilting thread white; applique thread blue. Batting is 100% polyester fiberfill. Fabric used for the backgroud and backing are sheets as there are no seams; the blue fabric is laid with a 60" width sewn to a 26" width. Binding is /8" wide. Applique stitches good, quilting spaced 1 1/2" apart. Quilted pineapples at corners.&#13;

Has "July 21, 1948" embroidered in one corner.</text>

                <text>Quilt was designed and made for Mary Wong Baumgartner, based on a 1897 kapa "Na Kalaunu, Ma Kahili, me na Pe'ahi (crowns, kahili and fans) Applique done by two ladies, Aunt Elizabeth Akana, age 85, and her niece Mary K. Richardson. Appliqued top was sent to Mrs. Barbara Nichols of Milbury, Ohio, in 1975/76. She completed the quilting in March 1976.&#13;

                <text>Hawaiian quilt, rose on white, cotton Indian Head fabric. Rose backing fabric faded and white has turned to ivory. Cotton batting, quilted in echo style. Border design applied with fine feather stitching on cut edge; feather stitching outlines binding which is part of rose backing brought to front; narrow edge of white between binding and scalloped edge of design. Binding frayed; rose fabric pieced 22 1/2" from edge of design; white pieced at 31 3/4"; 31 3/4", 10". Stain in lower left corner, insect damage, holes in backing.&#13;

Pattern is similar to "nani o ka Home" (Home Beauty) with slight changes (leaves and flowers reversed in small pattern, top leaf is missing, edge of design scalloped, long slit in main stem pattern.) Has been compared with photo of Kauai/quilt by that name.&#13;

Applique is done with Wa-wae Moa stitching (chicken feet), as was the binding. The echo quilting was done 3/8" apart.&#13;

Repaired (see record) and foxed in places.&#13;
Badly faded and has large brown spot.&#13;

                <text>Though this quilt came from a Judd family member it was purchased at a Woman's Board of Missions auction in the 1950s, so does not have a missionary provenance. Probably made by three ladies in Kohala. The quilt has three repairs on the front which are done so beautifully as to be invisible. Appraised by Elizabeth Akana (see donor file).&#13;
