Made of red, white and blue cotton fabric. Backing white fabric of a looser weave than the quilt top. Quilted diagonally in stripes across the flags, and in diagonal squares in the center. White thread used for quilting. Batting has balled up from washing, white fabric discolored, and some of the thread used for quilting has broken. Blue binding worn. Stained with white fabric discolored, 6 minor holes in front, 1" tear in backing. Fabric is 100% cotton, design - medium blue; background - white; backing - white; binding - blue chambray; quilting thread white; applique thread blue. Batting is 100% polyester fiberfill. Fabric used for the backgroud and backing are sheets as there are no seams; the blue fabric is laid with a 60" width sewn to a 26" width. Binding is /8" wide. Applique stitches good, quilting spaced 1 1/2" apart. Quilted pineapples at corners. Has "July 21, 1948" embroidered in one corner. Binding frayed; rose fabric pieced 22 1/2" from edge of design; white pieced at 31 3/4"; 31 3/4", 10". Stain in lower left corner, insect damage, holes in backing. Andrews Family Collection. Pattern is known as Maui Beauty, but donor said her quilt was called Kahului Breakwater. Applique is done with Wa-wae Moa stitching (chicken feet), as was the binding. The echo quilting was done 3/8" apart. Repaired (see record) and foxed in places. Badly faded and has large brown spot. Judd Family Collection.
