The backing is bleached muslin. Binding was machine sewn same fabric as the applique. Applique stitch is overcast, white thread. Red fabric and binding are very worn. There is a large hole in the background near the center. A muslin patch was sewn on the backing by curatorial staff to strengthen the area around the hole.</text>

                <text>Hawaiian Flag quilt with flags in each corner and center square with appliqued crown, leaves and 1896. Made of red, white and blue cotton fabric. Backing white fabric of a looser weave than the quilt top. Quilted diagonally in stripes across the flags, and in diagonal squares in the center. White thread used for quilting. Batting has balled up from washing, white fabric discolored, and some of the thread used for quilting has broken. Blue binding worn. Stained with white fabric discolored, 6 minor holes in front, 1" tear in backing.</text>
