missionary teacher.
2. poaha - The Po‘ahā, lit. Thursday, is a reference to the Bible study meetings, held
on Thursdays, that prepared one for baptism and membership in the church
congregation.
3. Charles Kanaina - Charles Kanaʻina was a chief, a member of court, and the
husband of Miriam ʻAuhea Kekāuluohi.
4. kanaka no, no maua - Kānaka nō, no māua (subjects indeed, of the two of us)
probably indicates two people from the lands or household of Kanaʻina and his
wife.

1. Mi Kamalani – Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of
missionaries. He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a
missionary teacher.
2. Davida – Davida is probably David Kalākaua, son of Kapaʻakea and Ane Keohokālole
and classmate with Lot at the Chiefs' Children's School. He later becomes the seventh
king of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
3. Loka – Lot Kapuāiwa, son of Mataio Kekūanāoʻa and Kīnaʻu, was a student of the
Chiefs' Children's School at the time of this letter. He later became the fifth ruler of the
Hawaiian Kingdom, known as Kamehameha V.
4. C. Kanaina – Charles Kanaʻina was a man of chiefly lineage who married Miriam
ʻAuhea Kekāuluohi. Their son, Willian Charles Lunalilo, became the sixth monarch of
the Hawaiian Kingdom.

3. Lunalilo - William Charles Lunalilo, the son of Charles Kanaʻina, was four years old at
the time of this letter and a student of the newly founded Chiefs' Children's School. He
later became the 6th king of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi.

ʻAuhea Kekāuluohi. Their son, Willian Charles Lunalilo, became the sixth monarch of
the Hawaiian Kingdom.
