1. Kamalani - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of
missionaries, superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a

2. poaha - The Po‘ahā, lit. Thursday, is a reference to the Bible study meetings, held
on Thursdays, that prepared one for baptism and membership in the church
congregation.
3. Charles Kanaina - Charles Kanaʻina was a chief, a member of court, and the
husband of Miriam ʻAuhea Kekāuluohi.
4. kanaka no, no maua - Kānaka nō, no māua (subjects indeed, of the two of us)

For
Chamberlain
Pahua
Chamberlain,
Provide me with a pane of glass for my house that is ten inches tall and eight inches wide,
for I have a small glass currently in place, but it does not fit the door of my house. If you do get
one, let this glass be for me, for I searched the stores and found nothing.
Notes:
1. Chs Kanaina - Charles Kanaʻina was a man of chiefly lineage who married Miriam
ʻAuhea Kekāuluohi. Their son, Willian Charles Lunalilo, became the sixth monarch of
the Hawaiian Kingdom.
2. Kamalani - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of missionaries.
He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a missionary
teacher.
3. Pahua - The first letter of this word is uncertain, being on a tear of the paper, but is
possibly Pahua, an area near Kawaiahaʻo, where Chamberlain resided in Honolulu.

Chamberlain,
I believe that perhaps through you I can get my black vest. My man went to the stores,
but found no vest.
Black, fade-resistant when put in water. If you have one, let me know the cost.
Regards to you,

should be cloth or cash.
