I have received, given me by Levi Kamalani, thirty-six dollars; these dollars are for Paki
regarding a debt on the part of Mr. Gulick. He had a promissary note that he gave to Paki, but it
was lost, so if said note should be found later it is of no import, because the money has been
obtained. This is the clarifying document.

Honolulu- 2 March 1847
Sir
I do not send to you the notes by
Mr Wylie and respect to the 22 articles
which you propose in Hawaiian, because
you do not understand our language.
I am am sorry not to agree with you
in many points, but I cannot consent
that the King should not be Sovereign
and Supreme in his own dominions
or that he should be less etc, over your
fellow citizens, his own natives or other
foreigners.
Nor can I consent that foreigners
should dictate laws to us, or enjoy privileges enabling them to come into the
country, without permission of the
authorities, to supplant the natives of
these lands, and take the whole power
into their own hands.
I know you do not wish to do this
but your treaty would have that effect
and in many things it would favor
bad Americans, and prevent the govern-

ment from appointing those who are great
men to attain justice from those who
wish to cheat them.
I cannot consent that any treaty
should be formed contrary to the resolutions
of the last Legislature. We desire to live
quietly and in peace & not to be always
in trouble.
Give us a treaty that will present
peace & not create troubles - one that will
not restrain us in punishing the bad, nor in
appointing the good. I am sure you will l endeavor
to do so, for the President of the United States
[Page 2 of 2]
has recommended you as a good
man, and I believe you to be our
friend.
I have the honor to be, with
much esteem,
Sir
Your obedient servant
John Ii
Anthony Ten Eyck Esquire
Commissioner of the U.S
2L 0L 0L

Kamehameha Paiʻea. Kauikeaouli ruled the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1825 to 1854.
4. President of the United States - James Knox Polk was the 11th President of the United
States. He was in office from March, 1845 - March, 1849.
5. Ii/John Ii - John Papa ʻĪʻī began his service in the royal court when he served as an
attendant to Kalanikualiholiho, Kamehameha II. Īʻī later became a trusted advisor and

L. H. Gulick
Greetings to you,
I have received your letter from the hand of Maawe, and saw the statements there, and we
have acted on it. Maawe has been released as newspaper delivery supervisor because of his
infirmity.
We still do not have his replacement, so on the first Friday of next January, I will send a
boy of mine to the Kuokoa office for this, and we will have an appropriate person to do this job
in the future, along with the names of the subscribers in each area.
With appreciation
J. Ii

Greetings to you,
Today this boy finishes fetching newspapers, and Kamakahonu will be the one to to go
get them. He will begin two Fridays from now. He has received 43 dollars through his deliveries,
but his wages are not to be paid in hand if I do not arrive with the remaining 3 dollars. That is
what I report to the two of you.
With thanks,
Ioane ʻĪʻī

Notes:
1. J. Ii - John Papa ‘Ī‘ī (1800-1870) had many roles in the Kingdom of Hawaii, and was writing
a column for the newspaper Ka Nupepa Kuokoa about Hawaiian history, parts of which were
later published in English as “Fragments of Hawaiian History,” for which ‘Ī‘ī is well known
today.
2. W. Chamberlain - Warren Chamberlain, son of missionary Levi Chamberlain, handled the
accounts of the Nupepa Kuokoa.
3. nei keiki - It appears ʻĪʻī is referring to himself when he says nei keiki, "this boy," being the
one who picks up the newspapers.
4. Kamakahonu - The person who is already delivering papers and will begin to pick them up
from the office in place of ʻĪʻī. No other information is known.

W. Chamberlain
Greetings to you,
I received your letter and the amount of money in your hands. It seems, however,
that the money for the newspaper is unclear in your report. But I received your receipt for
the bibles that was paid at the Kuokoa office on June 2, 1869.

$8.00

Because of this, I was surprised that perhaps you had not received the other newspaper
monies, because the Kuokoa delivery boy
[Page 2 of 2, left side]
previously brought, in his hand, 27 dollars to Joseph Kawainui. A receipt was not
obtained from him for those dollars delivered by hand.
The second delivery was 9.00, and that money was probably received by you, but
I have looked for that receipt and it was not found, but maybe later. The total is:
27
9
2
$38.00
$5.00 Here in my hands
$43.00 The total from the delivery by this boy, and this boy is now retiring.
[Page 2 of 2, right side]
Regarding this, discuss with Ios. Kawainui about that 27.00 dollars lest it disappear
completely.
With appreciation,
John Ii

at Royal School in Honolulu, was trained in printing at Lahainaluna. He became coeditor and editor of the Kuokoa newspaper for a number of years.

Hon. John Ii
Waiawa 15 Dec. 1869
To the chairman of the Island Ministerial Conference
Greetings to all of you
Because of my problem with insufficient time to edit a copy or copies of the
historical fragments for our newspaper, copies that might meet the wishes of one from the
Supreme Court, according to what he had earlier commanded of me this past month. I am
supposed to send it to him next Friday. And as to things and
[Page 3 of 4]
folks of this district, their vigor has diminished in the services and Sunday school, but
those services have continued to this time.
Volunteers have decreased as well, but no commotion or arguing is heard. Also
the disagreement between myself and J. Kahauolono concerning the book is over, and we
get along fine.
There have not been many deaths, and there have been 19 healthy births, while 9
have died. Some are pregnant – perhaps 19.
There is not much drunkenness, only very little, and it is the same for awa
intoxication. It is not certain
when these ways will end, and the same with pagan ways and such. But the Lord is the
one who knows all.
Also, if some item or items are considered for the days ahead, they can be seen in
our newspaper.
Additionally, I have continually pressed for the outstanding debts of the
subscribers, 52 dollars. This should be submitted before the stated deadline – it is 53
total, and I have one dollar in hand. If the subscribers are amenable, they will pay in full,
and thus the remainders shall be brought in.
With love, your speaker,
J. Ii
Notes:
1. J. ʻĪʻī – John Papa ‘Ī‘ī (1800-1870) had many roles in the Kingdom of Hawaii, and was
writing a column for the newspaper Ka Nupepa Kuokoa about Hawaiian history, parts

of which were later published in English as “Fragments of Hawaiian History,” for
which ‘Ī‘ī is well known today.
2. J. Kahauolono – J. Kahauolono was the luna pa aupuni or pound master for the
Waiawa district of O‘ahu.

Dr. L.H. Gulick,
Regards be to you,

Our little private meeting yesterday at Holo's store was about Bishop's money in
my hand. Just afterwards, sadness and great embarrassment came upon me, coming from
the two of you.
This is the first time that I have come upon this, having mistakenly climbed onto a
man-o-war jellyfish, like Kamalalawalu and the others.
And therefore I ask you and all your fellow church pastors of my beloved island
to please release me from duties in the services of the beloved Lord.
A copy from Bishop will be forthcoming.
I am your humble servant.
J. Ii
Notes:
1. L.H. Kulika - Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick, born in Honolulu in 1828, was the son of
Rev. Peter J. Gulick, who arrived with the third company of missionaries. He was
a physician and chief organizer of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society.
2. paimalau - Paʻimalau is called a Portuguese man-o-war today, a small stinging
jellyfish type of sea creature that floats on the ocean surface.
3. Kamalalawalu - Kamalālāwalu, a Maui chief, mistook a paʻimalau as a canoe,
whereupon he and his group climbed up onto it, causing the paʻimalau to sink and
them to lose their fishing gear. ʻĪʻī's reference to that legendary event seems to be
acknowledging that he has made a grave error in judgment.
4. John Ii - John Papa ʻĪʻī began his service in the royal court when he served as an
attendant to Kalanikualiholiho, Kamehameha II. Īʻī later became a trusted advisor
and chief in the court of Kauikeaouli, Kamehameha III and continued to serve the
sovereigns of Hawaiʻi until his death in 1870.
