and perhaps sweet potato as well.

Waipio, May 20, 1826.
Greetings to you, Mr. Chamberlain,
I saw your letter; deep regards to Mr. Richards, having not seen him because of the return to
Maui. You saw John at his death. I regret you not having seen Kaairipoa at the time of death.
Here is my message to you. Write down the message that I wrote to you. And when the letter is
finished, give it to Kupele and he will bring it here. Regards to Bingham and Mrs. Bingham.
Regards to all of you.

Notes:
1. Mr. Chamberlain – Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of missionaries.
He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a missionary
teacher.
2. Mr. Richards – Rev. William Richards arrived with the second company of missionaries and
served as a teacher.
3. John – This John, who died, is unidentified.
4. Kaairipoa - This person, Kaʻailīpoa, is another mention of a person who died at the time of
this letter.
5. Kupele – An unidentified individual who will deliver a letter.
6. Binamu – Rev. Hiram Bingham arrived with the first company of missionaries in 1820.
7. James Kahuhu – James Kahuhu was educated with the chiefs and was among the first group
to learn English and written Hawaiian. He became a teacher of literacy and Christianity.
