Oahu, Waipio. May 27th, 1826
I have seen the letter that you wrote. I have received the knives, I received 10
knives.
Here is my word to you, I am preaching the word of God to the people of this
place, the word of the Lord, so that they will properly know the grace of God. Here is my
other message to you. Address the nature of the fourteen signs so that we know the nature
of those words of God. Do send over more spelling primers for me. The people of this
place greatly desire the written word. There are many students here: many men, women
and children. Here is another message to you. Tell me about the people at the beginning
of Genesis, in section five or section four. Write that text to me so that I know it well.
Also the tenth section, tell me about those two sections.
You must tell Mr. H. Bingham to tell me of the laws that you still have.
And when you know, tell me the laws that remain with you so that my statements to the
unenlightened ones are correct.

Do give me some hymnals, five hymnals for me. I currently do not have any
hymnals. Give my regards to Mr. Bingham. I am here doing what he wishes, so do tell
him. Here is another message to you. What was the transgression for which Moses died?
Tell me of his death so that I know the transgression for which he died. Also with the
wrong for which David died, do tell me.
Regards to Mr. Loomis, Richards, Samuel Kanae and Poupou.

Notes:
1. Mr. Chamberlain – Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company
of missionaries. He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and
served as a missionary teacher.
2. beaba - The pīʻāpā was the Hawaiian word referring to the spelling primers that
were used to teach literacy.
3. H. Bingham - Rev. Hiram Bingham arrived with the pioneer company of
missionaries.
4. pauku - This term was originally used to refer to either the chapter or verse of the
Bible, which was being translated at the time of this letter. Today mokuna is
consistently used for chapter and paukū for verse.
5. ina kanawa i - I nā kānāwai, translated here as "the laws," could be a reference to
the Ten Commandments of the Bible, or to the book of Deuteronomy, which was
eventually translated into Hawaiian as Kānāwailua.
6. James Kahuhu - James Kahuhu was educated with the chiefs and was among the
first group to learn English and written Hawaiian. He became a teacher of literacy
and Christianity.
