Waipio Sept. 6, 1826
Greetings to you, Mr. Chamberlain,
I am currently preaching to students, one lau (four hundred) of students, and one
additional kanaha (forty) along with twenty-seven: 467.
Here is my message to you; I am striving on my own. I preach to students and to
those who are seeking some portion of God's word, which I have acquired. That which I
have obtained from all of you is what I am teaching to the students. I have sought no
other text;
the word of God is what I preach to them. The will of our Lord is what I do.
Mr. Chamberlain
Oahu
Kawaiahao
I maintain his love in my heart and his patience with me while preaching of God's
will. I repent my breaking of God's laws. I love Him. May we gain salvation through
Jesus.
James Kahuhu
Notes:
1. Mr. Chamberlain – Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company
of missionaries, the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as
a missionary teacher.
2. lau – Kahuhu uses a traditional numbering system. A lau is considered to be four
hundred (400). The Hawaiian traditional numbering system was based in units of
four, forty and four-hundred, etc.
3. James Kahuhu – James Kahuhu was one of the first people who learned English
and written Hawaiian with the high chiefs. He later became a teacher of literacy
and Christianity.
