February, Sabbath
Greetings to you Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlain,
Here is my message to you. All the Luke and the hymnals are gone, those being the
texts that were extensively sought. Send both of those texts, and when they are also gone,
the money will be sent back, once that is sent back, that previous text, Oihana Kowe, that is
what remains of the previous texts. Four dollars was received from the previous text.

Provide us with Luke, with Hymnals, and hopefully you have the spelling primer. Do
provide that as well.
From K. Kapule

recd. Feby. 24, 1830
Mr. Chamberlain
Honolulu, O Naliipaio, deliver this letter.
Notes:
1. Mi Kamalani - Mr. Levi Chamberlain was a member of the second company of
missionaries. He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served
as a missionary teacher.
2. Luka - This is a reference to the book of Luke in the Bible, published as a separate
text.
3. Himeni - This could refer to hymnals, which were in demand, or could refer to either
the book of Psalms or the Song of Solomon from the Bible.
4. oihana Kowe - The word ʻOihana is the Hawaiian title for book of Acts in the Bible,
but the Kowe is an unclear reference.
5. K. Kapule - Deborah Kapule Kekaihaʻakūlou was among the first people to learn
reading and writing. At the time of this letter she was helping to run a school in
Kahana, Waimea, Kaua‘i.
