W. Chamberlain
Greetings to you,
Today this boy finishes fetching newspapers, and Kamakahonu will be the one to to go
get them. He will begin two Fridays from now. He has received 43 dollars through his deliveries,
but his wages are not to be paid in hand if I do not arrive with the remaining 3 dollars. That is
what I report to the two of you.
With thanks,
Ioane ʻĪʻī

Notes:
1. J. Ii - John Papa ‘Ī‘ī (1800-1870) had many roles in the Kingdom of Hawaii, and was writing
a column for the newspaper Ka Nupepa Kuokoa about Hawaiian history, parts of which were
later published in English as “Fragments of Hawaiian History,” for which ‘Ī‘ī is well known
today.
2. W. Chamberlain - Warren Chamberlain, son of missionary Levi Chamberlain, handled the
accounts of the Nupepa Kuokoa.
3. nei keiki - It appears ʻĪʻī is referring to himself when he says nei keiki, "this boy," being the
one who picks up the newspapers.
4. Kamakahonu - The person who is already delivering papers and will begin to pick them up
from the office in place of ʻĪʻī. No other information is known.
