Greetings to you, Bingham,
I have tried a foreigner, Conner, and it was perfectly clear to me that this
foreigner lied. My heart was pained by his invoking the names of the king, Kauikeaouli,
of Kinau and me as well. He said that we had gambled.
We did not gamble. He was taken to be jailed.

Letter of Kekuanaoa respecting
Conner
Notes:
1. Binamu - Rev. Hiram Bingham arrived in Hawaiʻi with the first company of
missionaries. He served as the first reverend at Kawaiahaʻo Church in Honolulu.
2. Kanera - Conner is the likely English form of this unidentified foreigner's name
who was tried by Kekūanāoʻa and jailed.
3. Kekuanaoa - Although the letter is not signed, the note [in a different hand] on the
cover of this letter indicates that this is a letter from Kekūanāoʻa concerning
Conner, a foreigner. Mataio Kekūanāoʻa, of chiefly descent, was first married to
Kalani Pauahi and then to Elizabeth Kīnaʻu. He was the Royal Governor of the
island of Oʻahu from 1834-1868, a member of the House of Nobles and Privy
Council, the 6th Kuhina Nui (regent) and the father of Kamehameha IV and
Kamehameha V.
