He was the superintendent of secular affairs for the mission and served as a missionary teacher. 2. beaba - The pīʻāpā was the Hawaiian word referring to the spelling primers that were used to teach literacy. 3. H. Bingham - Rev. Hiram Bingham arrived with the pioneer company of missionaries. 4. pauku - This term was originally used to refer to either the chapter or verse of the Bible, which was being translated at the time of this letter. Today mokuna is consistently used for chapter and paukū for verse. 5. ina kanawa i - I nā kānāwai, translated here as "the laws," could be a reference to the Ten Commandments of the Bible, or to the book of Deuteronomy, which was eventually translated into Hawaiian as Kānāwailua. 6. James Kahuhu - James Kahuhu was educated with the chiefs and was among the first group to learn English and written Hawaiian.
