Oahu, Honolulu March 16, 1825
Greetings to you, Evarts,
Here is my message to you. I give salutations to you. Love to you for sending over the
missionaries and the word of God to us so that we know the good word of God. We observe the
good word of God and we want the good word of God, Jehovah, our great lord in heaven. It is he
who fashioned us well. We strive in the word of Jesus. Have compassion for us as we endeavor
toward the word of God. Our hearts are turning to the righteousness of God, along with the new
king of ours, of myself and Kaahumanu. We all want the word of God and all
[Page 2 of 3]
the chiefs desire the good word of God. We have seen the righteous word at this time. We are
repenting for our past faults. Those previous faults are over, along with our former king. Those
wrongs are over, along with that king of ours. That previous, ancient heart is ended, along with
that former king of ours. This is a new king the two of us serve, with a new heart that God has
given to us all. Our king died in England. We regard the good word of our great God. I shall
honor God for my blessings. My existence is due to God. I yearn for God.
Faults of the past are what we now repent, that you all may hear. I give my regards to you,
Evarts.

Notes:
1. Evarts - Jeremiah F. Evarts was an early leader of the American Board of Commissioners
of Foreign Missions (ABCFM). He was a reformer who advocated for the rights of
Native Americans and wrote under the pseudonym William Penn.
2. Kaahumanu - The favorite wife of Kamehameha I, Kaʻahumanu was Kuhina Nui, or
Regent, with Kauikeaouli, King Kamehameha III, at the time of this letter.
3. Karaimoku - Kālaimoku, also known as Kalanimoku and William Pitt Kalanimoku, was a
trusted advisor of Kamehameha I. During the travels of Liholiho and Kamāmalu to Great
Britain, he co-ruled with Kaʻahumanu, maintaining a leadership role during the first
reigning years of the new king, Liholiho's younger brother, Kauikeaouli.
4. Mr. Bingham - Rev. Hiram Bingham arrived in Hawaiʻi with the first company of
missionaries in 1820. He was the leader of the Mission and was the pastor of the first
church, Kawaiahaʻo. His translation and annotation are included in the original of this
letter.

(Copy of Kalaimoku’s letter to Mr. B.)
Honolulu, Oahu October 28, 1826
Greetings to you, Mr. Bingham,
Here is my message to all of you, our missionary teachers. I am telling you that I
do not see your wrongdoing. If I should see you to be wrong, I would tell you all. No,
you should all just be good. Give us literacy and we will teach it; and give us the word of
God, and we will heed it. Our women are restricted, for we have learned the word of
God. Then foreigners come, doing damage to our land, foreigners of America and
Britain. Do not be angry, for it is we who are to blame for you being faulted, and not you
foreigners. Here is my message according to the words of Jehovah. I have given my heart
to God and my body and my spirit. I have devoted myself to the church for Jesus Christ.
Have a look at my message, Mr. Bingham and company, and if you see it and wish to
send my message to America, to our chief, that is up to you.

Greetings to our chief in America. Regards to him.

missionaries.
2. Kalaimoku – Kālaimoku, also known as Kalanimoku and William Pitt
Kalanimoku, was a trusted advisor of Kamehameha I. During the travels of
Liholiho and Kamāmalu to Great Britain, he co-ruled with Kaʻahumanu,

Liholiho's younger brother, Kauikeaouli.

3. ke alii o kakou ma Maleka – Literally, "to our chief in America," could be a

Honolulu March 10th 1825.
We send affection to all of you, Nahienaena and your people, Hoapili and yours,
Mrs. Hoapili and her people, Wahinepio and her circle, and the foreign Missionaries and
company, and to everyone, affection to all of you, and indeed to us all.
Kaahumanu informs all of you that our chiefs have died, both chiefs. Liholiho and
Kamamalu are dead. The passing of Kamamalu was first, and seven days later, Liholiho
died after her; they both perished. In Britain is where they died. It was the month of
Mahoemua, July 1824. They were in Britain two months and then died. The king said to
Boki and company, and to King George, "Return me and Kamehamalu to Hawaii." They
will likely be making landfall soon.
Lament in your hearts for the death of our King, with two sacred ones for whom
to grieve.
Pray in repentance to God. Offer heartfelt prayer to Jehovah, that he may have
mercy on all of us. Express love for

God, who cares for us, and you should all keep the word of God.
We are vanquished, our chiefs have died, let us turn to the word of God, to that
which will soothe our hearts, and let this whole archipelago turn to almighty God of
heaven, and let us all pray to him that we may be saved.
You folks should handle the people so the outcome is good. The two of us will
send for all of you to come.
May Jesus Christ save you all.
The missionaries send salutations to all of you.
Sincere regards for all of you.

Notes:
1. Honoruru - Honolulu, as reflected in earlier spelling, where "l" was often
interchanged with "r," as seen in Hoapiri, Rihoriho and many other names or
words in the letter.
2. Nahienaena ma - Nāhiʻenaʻena was the child of Kamehameha I and his most
sacred wife, Keōpūolani, and was the younger sister of Liholiho and Kauikeaouli.
She was ten years old at the time of this letter. The word "ma" following her name
and the following four names refers to others around the person named, likely
family members, friends, or close associates.
3. Hoapiri ma - Ulumāheihei Hoapili, Kamehameha I's close and trusted advisor,
was the father of Liliha, who was on the journey to Britain. The "ma" includes
those around him.
4. Hoapiri wahine ma - Kalākua Kaheiheimālie was the wife of Hoapili. The "ma"
includes those around her.
5. Wahinepio ma - Kahakuhaʻakoi Wahinepio is the third wife of Kamehameha I
and a sister of Kālaimoku (below). She served as governor of Maui for a time.
The "ma" includes those around her.
6. ka haore Misionari ma - Lit. "the foreign missionaries," this refers to those of the
first two missionary companies who were close to the chiefs here. The "ma"
includes their spouses or those around them.
7. Kaahumanu - The favorite wife of Kamehameha I, Kaʻahumanu was Kuhina Nui,
or regent, ruling with Liholiho until his departure for Britain, and sharing rule
with Kalanimoku at the time of this letter.

8. Rihoriho - Liholiho, Kamehameha II, was King of Hawaiʻi during this time,
ruling alongside Kaʻahumanu. He and his wife, Kamāmalu, died of measles on a
visit to Great Britain to meet with King George IV and affirm diplomatic ties with
that country.
9. Kamamalu - Kamāmalu, wife of Liholiho, Kamehameha II, preceded her husband
in death during their trip to Great Britain.
10. Boki - Boki Kamāʻuleʻule was a high chief in the court of Kamehameha and a
sibling of Kālaimoku. Boki traveled with the royal party to Britain.
11. Kamehamalu - A variation of the name Kamāmalu, the chiefess listed in note 9.
12. Kauikeaouli - This younger brother of Liholiho would become Kamehameha III
immediately following the sad news of the death of Kamehameha II, as
announced in this letter.
13. Karaimoku - Kālaimoku, also known as Kalanimoku and William Pitt
Kalanimoku, was a trusted advisor of Kamehameha I. During the travels of
Liholiho and Kamāmalu to Great Britain, he co-ruled with Kaʻahumanu,
maintaining a leadership role during the first reigning years of the new king,
Liholiho's younger brother, Kauikeaouli.
