Late Sunday Evening
Jan. 22th 1843
Greetings to you, Cooke and all the children of ours. Do extend loving regards to V.
Kamamalu. I received your letter with fond thoughts of you two and the children of ours. And I
agree with your words, I am praying to God amid this sadness and trouble when I find a moment
of respite, I pray cordially to God, letting my thoughts rely upon him, the one who is blesses us.
And when the pain is great, I then pray to God amid the sadness and distress. I always praise
God, who helps those who always place their trust in him, and I ask that we all strive together
through continual prayer to God, on my own behalf, on behalf of all the children of ours and for
the King and Prime Minister and for all the Chiefs and people, that we may all be blessed on the
day that our Lord is beheld.
I felt great compassion for Moses and Dr. Judd on the day they went back, for there was
much rain and bad condition of the roads, and when they returned, they had to endure the storm
and the muddy roads.
Regards to you, Mrs. Cooke, Sarai and all the children of ours. May we all be blessed by
the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Greetings to you, Cooke,

I would like some gallons of painting oil (turpentine), and if there are ten gallons, that’s
fine, but if there are more than ten gallons, I should buy it. Do, however, tell me the price per
gallon. That is my message, do send it.

Greetings to you, Cooke,
I received your accounting concerning my debt to you all for the one thousand thirty-four
board feet of wood. That is the extent of my debt to you. And the amount of money is one
hundred fifty-five dollars, and because J.S. Emerson took my one thousand thirty feet of
Northwest lumber, the value being one hundred thirteen dollars, therefore Emerson’s debt to me
is no longer outstanding. Here are fifty-two dollars. Write me out an invoice for the remainder of
my debt to you taking into account the fifty-two dollars. That is my message to you. With
gratitude,
M. Kekuanaoa

Greetings to you, Bingham,
I have tried a foreigner, Conner, and it was perfectly clear to me that this
foreigner lied. My heart was pained by his invoking the names of the king, Kauikeaouli,
of Kinau and me as well. He said that we had gambled.
We did not gamble. He was taken to be jailed.

Conner
Notes:
1. Binamu - Rev. Hiram Bingham arrived in Hawaiʻi with the first company of
missionaries. He served as the first reverend at Kawaiahaʻo Church in Honolulu.
2. Kanera - Conner is the likely English form of this unidentified foreigner's name
who was tried by Kekūanāoʻa and jailed.
3. Kekuanaoa - Although the letter is not signed, the note [in a different hand] on the
cover of this letter indicates that this is a letter from Kekūanāoʻa concerning
Conner, a foreigner. Mataio Kekūanāoʻa, of chiefly descent, was first married to
Kalani Pauahi and then to Elizabeth Kīnaʻu. He was the Royal Governor of the
island of Oʻahu from 1834-1868, a member of the House of Nobles and Privy

Notes:

1. This letter is addressed to no one, however since Mr. Levi Chamberlain served as the
superintendent for secular affairs, and apparently coordinated the Poʻahā, this letter
probably would be sent to him.
2. poaha - The Po‘ahā, lit. Thursday, is a reference to the Bible study meetings, held on
Thursdays, that prepared one for baptism and membership in the church congregation.
3. Kekuanaoa - Mataio Kekūanāoʻa, of chiefly descent, was first married to Kalani Pauahi
and then to Elizabeth Kīnaʻu. He was the Royal Governor of the island of Oʻahu at the
time of this letter (1834-1868), a member of the House of Nobles and Privy Council, the
6th Kuhina Nui (regent) and the father of Kamehameha IV and Kamehameha V.
