Description

Hawaiian Flag quilt with flags in each corner and center square with appliqued crown, leaves and 1896. Made of red, white and blue cotton fabric. Backing white fabric of a looser weave than the quilt top. Quilted diagonally in stripes across the flags, and in diagonal squares in the center. White thread used for quilting. Batting has balled up from washing, white fabric discolored, and some of the thread used for quilting has broken. Blue binding worn. Stained with white fabric discolored, 6 minor holes in front, 1" tear in backing.

Contributor

Probably made in 1896 according to date incorporated in design. Came down through the Robinson family; Mark P. Robinson, minister of Foreign Affairs in the Hawaiian government, in the 1890s was probably the first owner.

Information from Margot A. Morgan.
