Written on back:
"This is a picture of a heathen god. This is much smaller than the original. The foundation of the original is wickerwork. The red part is small red feathers fastened closely on. The hair is human hair- the ears yellow feathers. The mouth open, with dogs' teeth strung around. The ball of the eye is a nut which is grown here. The white is pearl- eyebrows black feathers"

Written on backing paper:
"Hawaiian Idol. Red feathers fastened on wickerwork. The original was 4 ft high. Eyes of pearl. Dogs teeth. Human hair. Honolulu, 1832.
