Description

On Saturday, May 9, 2015, Hawaiian Mission Houses featured the district of Wai‘anae and presented Moon Kauakahi, Mel Amina, and Ken Makuakane along with Aunty Alice Greenwood, Aunty Alice Maku‘e, Aunty Lucy Gay and the kupuna of Wai‘anae. Kumu Hula Twyla Ululani Mendez and Halau Na Pua A Lei, Kumu ‘Ohu Gon and his halau oli Na Wa‘a Lalani Kahuna o Pu‘u Kohola, Kumu Mahealani Wong with Na Hanona o Ka Halau Hula Pa Ola Kapu and and Kumu Hula Pohai Souza and Halau Hula Kamamolikolehua also appeared at this event. The kahiko portion of the concert showcased the Pele and Hi‘iaka saga. It is while Hi‘iaka travels across Wai‘anae on her way to Pohakea pass that she sees the smoke from the lava flows that have destroyed the lehua grove and killed her friend Hopoe.

This event was the second of our four-part 2015 Mele Wahi Pana music series featuring the music of the island of O‘ahu. Each place in the Islands of Hawai‘i has its own character, its own wind and rain, its own story, and its own music. Come on a musical tour of O‘ahu with hosts Aaron Mahi and Sam ‘Ohu Gon, featuring notable performers, scholars, Kumu Hula and Halau Hula.
